The Stories Behind the Scholarships: The Medic Family Farm Scholarship
Every scholarship has a story behind it: the people who created it, the experiences that inspired them to give and the students whose futures it may help shape.
For the first installment of The Stories Behind the Scholarships, the Norwin School District Community Foundation visits the Medic Family Farm in Shafton, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1924, the farm has been part of the Norwin area and surrounding communities for more than a century.
David Medic grew up on the farm before becoming a veterinarian and establishing his own cattle farm in Mercer, Pennsylvania. In the video, he shares how his family’s agricultural roots and his own career helped inspire the creation of the Medic Family Farm Scholarship for Norwin students.
The scholarship supports a graduating Norwin High School senior pursuing agriculture or a related field at a college, university or trade school. Those opportunities reach well beyond traditional farming, including fields such as veterinary medicine, forestry, wildlife and fisheries, food and nutrition science, land management, engineering, genetics, business, communications, public policy and technology.
Medic also discusses how agriculture continues to change, including the sophisticated technology used on modern farms and the range of careers that will be needed to meet future challenges.
The Medic Family Farm Scholarship provides an initial $3,000 award, with an additional $3,000 available for the student’s second semester if academic requirements are met.
Watch the first installment of The Stories Behind the Scholarships to hear the Medic family’s story and learn why students considering their next step may find more opportunities connected to agriculture than they realize.
